OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD)

Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder where a person experiences persistent intrusive and unwelcome thoughts, over which they have no control, and which are often followed by compulsions, impulses or urges to behave in a particular way, such as:

  • repetitive checking or counting or doing things in a particular order

  • obsessive cleaning or washing

  • hoarding or arranging objects

  • intrusive thoughts, obsessive thinking or ruminating or needing constant reassurance

Sufferers are often aware that their thoughts and behaviours are not rational but are powerless to prevent them due to anxiety that not performing their ritual behaviours will result in harm to themselves or to loved ones.

OCD, although a chronic condition, responds very well to treatment.

This can cause emotional distress and have a significant impact on your day-to-day life. BDD is closely related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

For some people, concerns about their appearance may make it difficult for them to go out in public or see other people and may cause other problems such as:

  • feelings of shame or guilt

  • isolation and loneliness

  • depression or anxiety

  • misuse of alcohol or drugs

  • feeling the need for unnecessary medical procedures, such as cosmetic surgery

  • eating disorders, self-harm or suicidal thoughts

Many people with BDD do not seek help for a long time because they are worried about being thought vain or "silly".

Sometimes a person with a phobia may feel extreme anxiety even by thinking or talking about the situation or object that triggers their anxiety.
Many people have fears about particular objects or situations. This is perfectly normal and only becomes a phobia if:

  • the fear is out of proportion to the danger

  • it is ongoing for a significant period of time

  • it has a negative impact on your day-to-day life
